The Importance of Drug Testing

Taking drugs is normal for a sick person. But then, taking drugs even without illness is not good to our health. In fact, it will only destroy the body system little by little until it finally breaks down. Although there are certain actions done by health agencies worldwide, we can't deny the fact that there are still people who are taking prohibited drugs until now. Unfortunately, the numbers of illegal drug victims are increasing instead of decreasing. Nowadays, there are a series of drug test done by medical agencies which forced employees, athletes and suspected persons to take.

A Drug test is a technical examination of urine, blood, hair and other fluid samples from the body's system. This test traces weather a person is taking drugs or not. Drug tests are common in schools, work places and medical institutions. Actually it's one of their requirements before they will hired or allow a person to enroll. Despite the fact that it's evidently an invasion of privacy, everyone is required to take a series of tests before engaging in several activities. Even out of school youths and unemployed individuals are still required to take the test. Drug tests can come up in several forms. It can either be urine test, hair follicle test or saliva test. Traditionally, a series of tests were done under the supervision of lab experts. But as of now, even parents can determine whether their children are taking drugs or not. With the help of home kits, parents can easily get samples without knowledge of their children.

Among the numbers of tests, hair follicle test is the most reliable. It's because hair is attached on a person's scalp wherein the number of toxins and contaminants can be easily determined. Besides, urine and saliva can be easily replaced. Hence, there is a huge possibility of getting incorrect results by taking such tests. Yes, drug test are accurate but then, there are instances wherein tests are counterproductive. Let's say for instance a person is taking drugs. Upon taking drug test, he or she can easily replace the samples. In other words, it is easy to cheat. Besides, drugs can be easily isolated in our body for about one to two days. Thus, there is a great chance of getting false positive results.

Today, more and more people are engaged with illegal drugs. Some are adults and some are too young. However, the campaign against drug addiction still continues. For many parents who want to know if their children are taking drugs, don't be afraid. Let them undergo a series of tests.

Fibromialgia

Jangan anggap remeh rasa nyeri dan kaku pada bagian otot Anda. Apalagi jika gangguan itu sudah berlangsung lama. Karena bisa jadi Anda terserang fibromialgia.

Sindroma Fibromialgia (Sindroma Nyeri Miofasial, Fibromiositis) merupakan sekumpulan kelainan yang ditandai dengan nyeri dan kekakuan pada jaringan lunak, termasuk otot, tendon (yang menghubungkan otot dengan tulang) dan ligamen (yang menghubungkan tulang dengan tulang lainnya). Nyeri dan kekakuan ini bisa timbul di seluruh tubuh atau terbatas pada daerah tertentu.

Menurut keterangan para ahli, penyakiti ini lebih sering dialami kaum perempuan dibanding laki-laki. Faktor ketegangan emosional dan stres di duga dapat meningkatkan risiko penyakit ini. Meskipun tidak berbahaya dan tidak berakibat fatal, tetapi gejala yang menetap sangat mengganggu penderitanya.

Gejala

Umumnya penderita akan mengalami rasa nyeri dan kaku di bagian persendian ataupun otot. Tak jarang pula rasa nyeri itu mengenai bagian urat yang melekatkan otot pada tulang.

Gejala yang muncul biasanya berupa :

* Rasa kaku menyerang di pagi hari
* Rasa sakit yang luas dan berlangsung lebih dari 3 bulan
* Sering merasa lelah, gelisah dan tidur yang tidak nyenyak
* Mengalami gangguan seperti sakit kepala, sindrom iritasi usus besar dan rasa nyeri panggul

Penyebab

Penyebabnya tidak diketahui, namun biasanya dipicu oleh:

* Stres fisik atau mental
* Kurang tidur
* Cedera
* Pemaparan oleh kelembaban atau dingin
* Infeksi tertentu
* Artritis rematoid

Perawatan

Selain mengkonsumi obat-obatan, penderita fibromialgia juga dapat melakukan perawatan sendiri, seperti :

* Mengatur diri Anda dengan sebaik mungkin. Jangan biarkan diri Anda terlarut dalam tekanan hingga menyebabkan stres.
* Sebaiknya menghindari melakukan aktivitas secara berulang-ulang dan selama berjam-jam. Saat melakuakn aktivitas tersebut, selingilah dengan waktu beristirahat.
* Rutinlah berolaraga. Pilih jenis olahraga low impat seperti berjalan kaki, naik sepeda, berenang atau sekedar melakukan latihan peregangan
* Perbaiki sikap tubuh dengan memperkuat otot-otot penopang, terutama otot-otot perut.
* Perbaiki pola tidur Anda. Akan lebih baik jika Anda tidak menggunakan obat tidur.

Pencegahan

Sebenarnya faktor terbaik yang bisa dilakukan untuk menghindari dan mengurangi fibromialgia adalah dengan menjaga kondisi fisik tetap baik, menghindari stres dan tidur yang cukup.

Namun ada juga beberapa faktor pendukung yang bisa Anda terapkan yaitu :

* Usahakan untuk tidak meninggalkan pekerjaan Anda. Dampak penyakit ini akan makin buruk pada mereka yang menyatakan dirinya tidak mampu untuk melakukan aktivitas apapun dan kemudian memilih berhenti dari semua kegiatannya tersebut

* Pelajarilah teknik-teknik relaksasi, melakukan pijatan atau mandi dengan air hangat.

Calcium linked to heart attacks in women

A new study casts a shadow on calcium, the essential mineral known to help keep bones strong, hearts healthy and blood pressure controlled.

New Zealand researchers report in the journal BMJ that otherwise-healthy, postmenopausal women who took calcium supplements were about twice as likely to suffer a heart attack as those who skipped the supplements.

That finding is surprising, because previous research has shown that calcium helps improve the ratio of healthy to unhealthy cholesterol by as much as 20 percent. Such changes are linked with a 20 percent to 30 percent reduction in so-called vascular events, including heart attacks. Other research with both calcium and vitamin D shows improvements in overall mortality among those who take the supplements.

So what accounts for the increased heart attacks?

"I don't know what to make of it," says Robert P. Heaney, a professor of medicine at Creighton University in Nebraska, who has conducted numerous calcium studies. "I think we just have to say that the jury is out."

Heaney noted that there is a large body of information showing calcium's benefits: "I don't expect that to go away."

Heaney has agreed to collaborate with New Zealand researcher Ian Reid to try to figure out why women who took calcium supplements in the study had an increased risk of heart attacks. "We will see," he said, "if the findings pan out."
